The Ô Yika Programme is a flagship education initiative implemented by Espace Opoko, a Congolese non-governmental organization committed to supporting indigenous children from primary school through university.

Designed to address deep educational inequalities, Ô Yika operates in some of the most marginalized and remote areas of the Republic of Congo, where indigenous communities face extreme poverty, geographic isolation, discrimination, and limited access to basic services.

A Trusted Institutional Partner

The Ô Yika Programme is implemented with the support of the Embassy of France in the Republic of Congo, under the Kotonga mechanism, which aims to strengthen Congolese civil society organizations.
This institutional backing has enabled the programme to scale up rapidly, strengthen its governance, and significantly increase the number of beneficiaries within a single year.

A Holistic and Integrated Approach

Ô Yika goes far beyond the distribution of school supplies. The programme is built on a comprehensive support model, recognizing that education cannot succeed without addressing children’s basic needs.

The programme includes:

  • coverage of school fees,

  • access to regular and adequate nutrition,

  • healthcare and medical follow-up,

  • housing support for students displaced to pursue their studies,

  • academic and career orientation sessions,

  • hygiene and health awareness workshops,

  • continuous educational and community monitoring.

Concrete and Measurable Results

Thanks to the Ô Yika Programme, 472 additional indigenous children were integrated into Espace Opoko’s education programme in a single year—an unprecedented expansion for the organization.

Key results include:

  • 472 students supported, with a strong representation of girls;

  • High success rates in national examinations (Primary Certificate, Middle School Certificate, High School Diploma);

  • Indigenous students maintained at university, including graduates at the bachelor’s level;

  • a significant reduction in school dropouts;

  • stronger community involvement in monitoring and supporting children’s education.

These results demonstrate that long-term, structured, and locally grounded support can transform educational outcomes for indigenous children.

Human Impact at the Core

Beyond statistics, Ô Yika tells powerful human stories:
children walking dozens of kilometers to attend school,
young people forced to abandon their studies due to lack of housing,
families who believed education was simply out of reach.

Today, these children are studying, graduating, and becoming role models within their communities.

A Critical Moment for 2026

The funding that enabled the programme’s exceptional expansion in 2025 is coming to an end.
Without new partners, hundreds of children risk having their education interrupted, not because of lack of motivation, but because of lack of resources.

The year 2026 is therefore decisive to:

  • preserve the achievements made so far,

  • secure ongoing educational pathways,

  • and extend opportunities to more indigenous children.

Why Invest in the Ô Yika Programme?
